Contemporary console tables can be functional, decorative or a mixture of the two. Modern sideboards have the advantage of narrow designs, so they can be put in a hallway or foyer without cramping the space. Contemporary sideboards usually feature drawers and doors or shelves to hold linens, dishes, china or other decorations. In addition to the shelves, the table top makes a great display area for decorative items. It's a great way to accentuate and personalize a room.
The design of eighteenth and nineteenth century houses usually did not include much space for storage. Because of that furniture makers were called upon to solve the problem of where to keep things when they were not being used everyday. The dining room generally had one of those solutions in the form of the oak sideboard. The sideboard of most northeastern homes was made of oak due to its plenteous supply throughout the woodlands from Maine to Pennsylvania.
Smaller kitchen spaces, remodeling, receiving antiques: all reasons for having hutches. Contemporary hutches are generally made in two pieces and then placed together prior to delivery or shipping, depending on the brand and prices. The prices will vary, but the most expensive models of dining room hutches are made of cherry or oak, and are one piece and very heavy where weight is concerned. If you purchase a model that requires assembly, it is advisable that help be sought due to the weight of the finished product. Although there are some models that come in simple pressboard that have a laminate covering, these are few and far between and are not as reliable as wood or metal models.
Once the dishes were washed and dried, the oak sideboard would also be the storage place between meals. The structure of the sideboard was generally five to six-feet in length by eighteen inches deep by thirty-eight to forty-one inches tall. The height was configured to the waist height of the hostess, for the top of the sideboard had to coincide with her ability to carry platters of food to and from the furniture piece. The sideboard had cabinets in the main trunk of the piece with at least one and generally two drawers. The top had to be completely flat without any interruption of its surface as it was the main staging area for serving.
