Because of their practicality and beauty, sideboards would be a nice fit in any room in your home. Take your living room as an example, you could place one against a wall for a nice spot to display family photos or vases filled with flowers while its storage areas would be ideal for putting books, magazines, DVD's, family photo albums, and even board games. Another nice spot for one is at the end of a hallway. This would not only liven up the look of the hallway, but give you some extra storage space that you might not have had before. A few of the other places where one would work nice in your home include an entryway, bedroom, and even a larger bathroom.
Since contemporary dining rooms typically have a clean, modern and sort of minimalistic look, sideboards are not seen often in modern homes. They remain a standard feature of traditional dining rooms as they emphasise the overall traditional style and give the dining area a touch of warmth which in turn creates a unique atmosphere. But in the recent years, sideboards are getting increasingly sought after for contemporary dining rooms as well. Renewed interest in sideboards can partly be explained with the change in dining room furniture trends which put a greater emphasis on functionality.
When redesigning your kitchen and dining area, using dining room hutches will free up space in the kitchen and adds another cabinet to the dining area. The hutch area is used to store small cups, dishes or other knick knacks, while the buffet area is used for display or storage for others to see. The contemporary types sold today incorporate a buffet, sideboard and cabinets into one unit for ease of use. These hutches are not only used in the dining room, as many are made with sideboards for cutting or preparing food in the kitchen.
Once the dishes were washed and dried, the oak sideboard would also be the storage place between meals. The structure of the sideboard was generally five to six-feet in length by eighteen inches deep by thirty-eight to forty-one inches tall. The height was configured to the waist height of the hostess, for the top of the sideboard had to coincide with her ability to carry platters of food to and from the furniture piece. The sideboard had cabinets in the main trunk of the piece with at least one and generally two drawers. The top had to be completely flat without any interruption of its surface as it was the main staging area for serving.
