Some contemporary sideboards can be purchased with shelving or cabinets to be able to store those things that are not used all the time. There are even contemporary sideboards that have wine racks or barware racks. In addition to the clean lines, contemporary sideboards may come in different shades of wood grain. There are those that can also be found in the black laminate style. Normally very simple handles are used. You will not see the intricate designs on the handles, but you will see straight or more modern shapes. The handles may be made from chrome or brushed metals to give it that modern feel.
Everything assumes that the only place for sideboards is in the dining room. The thing is, these furnishings would actually be great choices for putting in other rooms throughout your home as well. The reasoning behind why sideboards can be used throughout your entire home is the fact that they are an extremely versatile furnishing. They have both a pleasing look and can be used to store, display, and set down any number of items.
Contemporary console tables can be functional, decorative or a mixture of the two. Modern sideboards have the advantage of narrow designs, so they can be put in a hallway or foyer without cramping the space. Contemporary sideboards usually feature drawers and doors or shelves to hold linens, dishes, china or other decorations. In addition to the shelves, the table top makes a great display area for decorative items. It's a great way to accentuate and personalize a room.
The design of eighteenth and nineteenth century houses usually did not include much space for storage. Because of that furniture makers were called upon to solve the problem of where to keep things when they were not being used everyday. The dining room generally had one of those solutions in the form of the oak sideboard. The sideboard of most northeastern homes was made of oak due to its plenteous supply throughout the woodlands from Maine to Pennsylvania.
